What is a Roth IRA?

A Roth IRA is a US individual retirement account funded with after-tax contributions. Qualified withdrawals can be tax-free when the applicable IRS requirements are satisfied.

Investments held within a Roth IRA may grow over time through interest, dividends and changes in investment value.

How does this Roth IRA Calculator work?

The calculator estimates future account value using your current Roth IRA balance, annual contributions, expected investment return, investment fees and years until retirement.

Contributions are assumed to be made at the end of each year. The calculator applies a constant assumed net annual return throughout the investment period.

How are investment fees included?

The calculator uses a simplified net annual return equal to the expected annual investment return minus the annual fee percentage.

For example, an expected annual return of 7% and annual fees of 0.2% produce an assumed net annual return of 6.8%.

Roth IRA contribution limits

Roth IRA contributions are subject to IRS rules, including annual contribution limits, income eligibility requirements and earned income restrictions.

Certain eligible individuals aged 50 or older may be able to make additional catch-up contributions.

The calculator does not automatically enforce annual contribution limits or income eligibility. Users should confirm the applicable rules for each tax year before making contributions.

Are Roth IRA withdrawals tax-free?

Qualified Roth IRA distributions are generally tax-free. Eligibility depends on requirements including the five-year rule and qualifying circumstances, such as reaching age 59½.

Nonqualified distributions may be subject to income tax or penalties, depending on the circumstances and the type of funds withdrawn.

This calculator estimates account growth only. It does not determine whether a withdrawal qualifies for tax-free treatment.

Important considerations

Results assume fixed annual contributions and a constant investment return. They do not account for inflation, changing contribution limits, market volatility or individual tax circumstances.

Investment returns are not guaranteed and actual results may differ.
