What is trading profit and loss?
Trading profit and loss (P&L) measures the money gained or lost when a position is closed. The result depends on your entry price, exit price, position size and trading costs.
How to calculate trading profit
For a long position, subtract the entry price from the exit price and multiply by the number of units traded.
Long Trade P&L = (Exit Price − Entry Price) × Units
For a short position, subtract the exit price from the entry price and multiply by the number of units traded.
Short Trade P&L = (Entry Price − Exit Price) × Units
How do trading fees affect profit?
Trading fees reduce the net return on a trade. This calculator applies the selected percentage fee separately to the entry and exit values.
For example, a long trade involving 20 units bought at $100 and sold at $110 generates a gross profit of $200.
With a 0.10% fee on each transaction, total fees are $4.20, leaving a net profit of $195.80.
What is the break-even exit price?
The break-even exit price is the price at which your gross trading profit exactly offsets your entry and exit trading fees.
For long positions, the break-even exit price is generally above the entry price. For short positions, it is generally below the entry price.
How is percentage return calculated?
This calculator divides net profit or loss by the entry position value and multiplies by 100. This measures return relative to the trade's opening notional value.
It is not a leveraged return on margin or account equity.
Important trading considerations
This calculator is designed for assets where a one-dollar price change per unit creates a one-dollar change in profit or loss. It does not account for futures contract multipliers, forex currency conversions, funding charges, borrowing costs, spreads, slippage or taxes.
Short selling may involve additional costs and risks. Actual results can differ from estimates, particularly in volatile markets.
