How the Investment Calculator works
This calculator estimates how much an investment portfolio could be worth in the future based on your starting investment, monthly contributions, expected annual return, fees and investment period.
Investment growth and contributions
Your investment can grow through two sources: money you contribute and returns generated by the investments themselves.
Investment returns can compound over time, meaning previous gains may generate additional returns in later periods.
How are investment fees calculated?
The calculator uses a simplified net annual return calculated by subtracting the annual fee percentage from the expected annual return.
For example, an expected annual return of 8% and annual fees of 0.5% produce an assumed net annual return of 7.5%.
Actual investment fees may be charged differently, and real investment returns will vary over time.
When are monthly contributions added?
Monthly contributions are assumed to be invested at the end of each month. The calculator converts the assumed net annual return into an equivalent monthly growth rate.
Investment Calculator vs Compound Interest Calculator
The Compound Interest Calculator focuses on interest compounding and lets you choose different contribution and compounding frequencies.
This Investment Calculator focuses on portfolio growth and includes an allowance for annual investment fees.
Important considerations
Results are hypothetical estimates. They assume a constant rate of return and do not account for taxes, inflation or market volatility.
Investments can lose value, and actual returns are not guaranteed.
