What is a crypto break-even price?
Your cryptocurrency break-even price is the selling price at which you recover your original investment and trading fees without making a profit or loss.
Because exchanges may charge fees when you buy and sell cryptocurrency, the break-even price is usually higher than your purchase price.
How is crypto break-even calculated?
First, calculate the quantity of cryptocurrency purchased by dividing the investment amount by the purchase price.
Next, add the buying fee to your investment cost. Finally, calculate the selling price needed so that the proceeds after selling fees equal your total purchase cost.
Break-even price = Total purchase cost ÷ [Cryptocurrency quantity × (1 − Selling fee rate)]
Crypto break-even example
Suppose you invest $1,000 in cryptocurrency at $50,000 per coin, with a 0.5% buying fee and a 0.5% selling fee.
You purchase 0.02 coins and pay $5 in buying fees, bringing your total purchase cost to $1,005.
To recover that cost after selling fees, the cryptocurrency must reach approximately $50,502.51 per coin.
Why is the break-even price higher than the purchase price?
Trading fees increase the cost of buying and reduce the money received when selling. Your cryptocurrency must therefore increase enough in value to cover both fees.
What does required price increase mean?
Required price increase shows the percentage the cryptocurrency's price must rise from your purchase price to reach break-even.
It includes the effects of both buying and selling fees entered in the calculator.
How does the target selling price work?
Enter a possible future selling price to estimate the net proceeds and profit or loss if you sell at that price.
This allows you to compare your target price with the minimum price needed to break even.
Does this calculator include taxes?
No. It does not include capital gains taxes, blockchain network fees, exchange spreads, slippage or currency conversion costs.
Cryptocurrency prices are volatile and can fall substantially. Results are estimates, not predictions of future market prices.
