What is dollar-cost averaging in crypto?

Dollar-cost averaging (DCA) is an investment strategy where you invest a fixed amount of money at regular intervals, regardless of the cryptocurrency's price.

For example, you might invest $100 in Bitcoin every month rather than investing a larger amount all at once. When prices are lower, your money buys more cryptocurrency. When prices are higher, it buys less.

How does the Crypto DCA Calculator work?

The calculator estimates the number of cryptocurrency units purchased at each interval using a projected price path based on your chosen annual price change.

It adds together the units accumulated over the investment period and multiplies them by the estimated ending price to calculate your portfolio value.

How are cryptocurrency trading fees included?

Trading fees are deducted from each scheduled investment. For example, a $100 purchase with a 0.5% trading fee uses $99.50 to purchase cryptocurrency.

Total invested includes the full amount contributed, including trading fees. Profit or loss is calculated after deducting those costs.

What does average purchase price mean?

The average purchase price is calculated by dividing the total amount spent on cryptocurrency, excluding trading fees, by the total cryptocurrency units acquired.

This is your volume-weighted average acquisition price. Your effective break-even price will be slightly higher when trading fees are included.

Crypto DCA example

Suppose you invest $100 every month for five years, starting when a cryptocurrency costs $50,000 per coin. You assume its price rises by 10% annually and pay a 0.5% fee on every purchase.

You would make 60 purchases and contribute $6,000, including $30 in trading fees. Your estimated portfolio value depends on the projected prices at each purchase.

Does DCA guarantee a profit?

No. Dollar-cost averaging spreads purchases across time but does not protect against falling prices. Cryptocurrency investments can lose substantial value.

The calculator assumes a smooth annualised price trend. Real cryptocurrency prices fluctuate unpredictably, and actual investment returns may differ significantly.

What costs are not included?

The calculator does not include selling fees, network transaction fees, spreads, slippage, taxes or currency conversion charges.
